The Seward High cheer team had an outstanding season, highlighted by their second-place finish at the state competition. This achievement was especially meaningful, as Lola Swanson shared, “My favorite part of the season was when we won second at state. It was so special because we got fourth last year, so it was so cool to climb our way up to the top.”
The team’s improvement throughout the season was evident in their strength and skills. Somi Clendaniel added, “We have been attending CrossFit as well as training in our personal time, weightlifting, and building endurance throughout the season.”
The cheerleaders felt their best performance was at the state competition. Lola explained, “Our best routine was our state routine. We worked so hard to create a routine that worked for everyone and showed all of our strengths.” One significant moment for Somi was “achieving an extension, which is a stunt. Last year, we were struggling with just a prep, and it’s been amazing to see how much we have improved.”
Teamwork played a crucial role in their success. Lola mentioned, “Our team dynamics this year have been the strongest it has ever been. We have teammates from all different grades, but we were able to still build a strong connection with each other.”
The strong bonds within the team kept them motivated. Lola shared, “One thing that’s motivated me is my friendships on the team. I love going to practice and games because I get so close with the girls through the season.”
Looking ahead, both Lola and Josie have ambitious goals for the team. Lola’s biggest goal is “to win state. We went from 4th to 2nd, and I think this team is just getting better each year. We have a good chance of winning next year.” Josie Andrews aims “to improve further on every skill and work hard to demonstrate the best of [her] ability for [her] junior year.”
For new cheerleaders joining the team, Somi advises, “Being the best isn’t what’s important. It’s putting in your best effort in all important things.”
The team not only received athletic recognition. The Seahawk girls walked away with the Academic Award as well! All of the girls finished the season with a 3.96 cumulative GPA, highlighting their hard work and determination.
This was a wonderful way to conclude the 2025 Basketball Cheer Season! We look forward to the positive energy returning in the fall! A collection of the girls will be coming back for the second year of Seahawks football cheer, elevating the rise of the sport in Seward.
