“Bottoms,” is a new comedy that’s directed by Emma Seligman. This movie throws you headfirst into the hilarious and awkward world of two high school best friends, PJ and Josie. These best friends are desperate to have someone like them before graduation, so they hatch a bizarre plan. Start a self-defense club for girls. What’s their real motive? To get close to the popular cheerleaders they’re hopelessly crushing on.
What follows is a blend of chaotic, over-the-top violent, absurd situations, and sharp commentary. The film happily criticizes toxic masculinity and high school stereotypes, and it does this all while maintaining a self-aware and comedic tone. With Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri perfectly capturing the awkwardness and desperation of their characters, the performances are fantastic.
“Bottoms” isn’t afraid to be outrageous, and that’s exactly why it works. It’s a raunchy, sort of unapologetic comedy that will have you laughing out loud the whole movie, even as you cringe. If you’re looking for a film that pushes boundaries and isn’t afraid to take risks, “Bottoms” is definitely worth checking out.
This movie was hilarious, despite the cringe. Some aspects were a little bit weird, but I still enjoyed it very much. If you’re looking for a funny, laughable, high school drama esc movie “Bottoms” is definitely for you. My final rating is an 8/10.
