In Seward, opportunities for activities in the community can be hard to come by, especially in the arts, but Lola Swanson has found a way to change that. Through the dance program she started, she has provided children with a space to express themselves, gain confidence, and move their bodies.
What started as small summer camps has grown into a year-round program that now reaches dozens of young people. From school performances to community recitals she has choreographed, Lola’s work has brought energy, creativity, and connection to a town that has now provided more financially accessible activities for children.
Lola’s leadership recently earned her recognition as one of Alaska Communications’ “Summer of Heroes” scholarship recipients, an honor that celebrates youth making a difference in their communities. Post high school graduation, Lola hopes to continue training as a dancer at a program such as CLI Dance Conservatory.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity to be chosen for the scholarship that was awarded for doing something that I love,” Lola shared. With her dedication to young dancers and her vision for the future, she is creating a lasting impact of art, connection, and confidence in her community.
