The National Football League is one of the biggest sports leagues in America. After all, football is supposed to be “the most american sport” (recent events say otherwise). And in football history there have been many teams/franchises, but only 32 exist today. One thing stands true though, ever since the NFL’s creation, football fans have always wondered, what is the best team in the league’s history? While there is an answer, I prefer to look at a more unanswered question, what is the worst team in the league’s history?

Today I will be looking at all 32 teams and deciding what team is the worst, history wise. In order to do so I will be looking at teams win rate percentage, worst seasons, and super bowl wins. Only rule is the team must still exist today. Who is the worst team in the NFL? Stick around and find out.

First we will be looking at the win rate percentage. To help people out, a win rate percentage is a percentile that shows you how many games you’ve won-lost in your team’s history. For example, if a team has a 1.0 win rate, that means for every game they lose, they win two. If your win rate percentage is 0.5 then you get a win for every game you lose, basically if your teams win rate is below 0.5 they are actual garbage. 

Out of all 32 teams only 19 have a win rate that is 0.5 or above. For this we will be looking at the three teams with the worst win rate. At number three we have the Arizona Cardinals with a 0.413 win rate. They are the oldest team in the NFL and they can’t even get a 0.5 win rate. Actual garbage. In second place we have the Houston Texans with a 0.403 win rate. Although the Texans are a new team that was just formed in 2002. So I can give them a pass. Finally in last place we have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 0.399 win rate. The Bucs are actually so bad that when they were first introduced into the NFL they lost their first 26 games. Not good.

To reinforce the fact that the Buccaneers are complete garbage, they were the first NFL team to never win or tie a game in a season, going 0-14 in 1976, but they aren’t the last team to have a horrible season. The other two teams to never win or tie a game in a season are the 2008 Detroit Lions and the 2017 Cleveland Browns, both of these teams going 0 – 16 in their respective seasons. 

To finish this off we’ll be looking at super bowl wins. While the Buccaneers are looking to be the worst team in the NFL, they actually have won a Superbowl in 2003, beating the raiders 48 – 21. While there are 12 teams that have never won a Superbowl, four of them have never been to a Superbowl. This being the Texans, Jaguars, Browns and Lions. While the Jags and the Texans have the excuse of being new, the Browns and Lions don’t. While both teams have won championship games before the super bowl was even a thing in 1966, that doesn’t matter. The NFL was hardly even the NFL before the super bowl came along.

Now obviously, after doing this research, we can come to the conclusion that the Lions, Browns and Bucs are the three worst NFL teams in history. But which ones are the worst? Well the Browns have a win rate of 0.547, making them the eighth best in the league, so I will put them at third place. This leaves us with the Bucs and the Lions. While the Bucs have the worst win rate in the league, the Lions have a win rate of 0.457, making them not much better at all. 

It took me a bit to come to a conclusion but I would have to say that the Bucs are the worst team in the NFL with the Lions at a close second. I decided this because, despite the Lions never going to a Superbowl, they have a better win rate and I have seen them go to the playoffs, while I don’t think I have ever seen the Bucs go into the playoffs in my lifetime. Although now that the Bucs have Tom Brady that might change, (I doubt it though, screw Tom Brady he’s a bad quarterback and makes out with his kids).
