A Serious Conversation: Preparing for the Possible WW3

Nora (Danielle) Andrews, Writer

So much has happened in the past two weeks that leads people to believe that the start of WWIII could very well be happening. Ukrainians have split and fled their country, while Russia continues to pelt them with missiles.

Across the globe, people are choosing to blame Vladimir Putin, President of Russia. For months, Putin denied he would invade his neighbor, but then he tore up a peace deal, sending forces across borders in Ukraine’s north, east and south. He is currently standing accused of “shattering peace in Europe.” Many of President Putin’s arguments were false or irrational. He claimed his goal was to protect people subjected to bullying and genocide and aim for the “demilitarisation and de-Nazification” of Ukraine. There has been no genocide in Ukraine – it is a vibrant democracy, led by a president who is Jewish.

If this theory and/or conspiracy is to be true, then Russia is made to look like an ally in trying to denazify Ukraine. However, most human beings are scrambling around in a panic, not knowing Putin’s justification of “denazifying”. Looking further into it, more theories are being adopted that this is President Putin’s grand excuse for pushing an attack on Ukraine.

The real question is: “How far will Russia go?” It is now clear that Russia is seeking to overthrow Ukraine’s democratically elected government. Its aim is that Ukraine be freed from oppression and “cleansed of the Nazis”; however, the citizens in between – both Ukrainian and Russian – are suffering miserably.

“Should the United States step in?” is a question Americans have asked themselves and one another in the past month. It is important to remember a quote from Mr. Rogers: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things on the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” This quote goes hand in hand with the fact that the United States is serving Ukraine as an aid, shipping them supplies that do not include soldiers or weapons, but rather medical supplies and food resources.

It is important to remember that although our world and fellow countries are severing bonds and pushing attacks on one another, we will remain the aids to fellow countries, and we will hopefully be the country that the rest of the world sees as the helpers.
