Seward Seahawks Basketball team took a trip to Bethel, Alaska, and had quite a memorable weekend. Traveling to new atmospheres, the team enjoyed hanging out, playing in front of big crowds, eating hot dogs, and playing 3-point lightning. While there wasn’t a great deal of exploring, Sevin enjoyed playing games at night instead of in the morning, while Emerson found the environment exhilarating during the winning game. Lane cherished making his free throws in front of the crowd as they were making noise to pressure him to miss, and Natalie’s favorite part was being on the airplane coming home. Mik appreciated the wins, the snacks, and the lighting but found it challenging as some teams didn’t like them all that much because they were winning.
Looking into the future, Sevin sees the Bethel trip as preparation for conference games towards the end of the season against the Su Valley Rams. Emerson viewed it as a learning experience, especially facing different levels of competition, “It was a learning point. We played two not-so-good teams and then we played one really good team with good defense so it was good to get in a good zone.” Being able to play all sorts of different teams, gives the Seahawks a chance to perfect the way that they play together.
When reflecting on the team’s performance, the Seahawks felt positive about their efforts, showcasing teamwork and victories. They thought they did well by playing together as a team and not playing at the other team’s level. There were some exceptional players acknowledged during the games such as Ava Jageilski and Van Shank awarded player of the game against Galena, Natalie Sieminski and Emerson Cross during the Su Valley game, and Lia Shank and Lane Peterson got the concluding mentions after the Bethel championship game. Mikinley Williams and Emerson Cross got all-tournament team awards wrapping up an exceptional weekend.
The team knows they need to keep working hard and playing together, and they’re feeling confident that they can take them on again. Next week, the Seahawks will be playing in the Homer Tournament against, their head-to-head competition the Bethel Warriors, Ninilchik Wolverines, Kodiak Bears, and the Homer Mariners. Overall, it sounds like the trip was a blend of challenges, victories, and personal growth for the Seahawks!
The Lady Seahawks take another victory on their seven-game winning streak placing first against Bethel Warriors. The boys placed second overall in the tournament. The Lady Seahawks continue into the next tournament in Homer with a target on their backs. After beating Bethel in their home gym, Bethel is going to want to end our winning streak, but can they do it? Let’s keep the momentum going Seahawks!
