Lancia, you’ve probably never heard this name before or if you have you really only know them as a fashion designers car that would be cruising around Europe. But in the 70s, 80s and early 90s they dominated the rally racing scene. Winning championships in 1974, 75, 76, 83, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, and finally in 92, this was the last year Lancia ever raced. To this day Lancia still holds the record for most consecutive wins in the WRC (World Rally Championship.) Lancia raced in the International Championship for Manufactures, Group B where there were no rules whatsoever and then finally Group A that had many different rules for safety reasons up until 1992
This manufacturer is known for its legendary cars during this era. From the Stratos HF that won championships from 74 to 76.
Then with the creation of Group B the Lancia Rally 037 was born, though this car was short lived only winning the 1983 championship. However, this started Lancia’s position in modern rally. But in 1987 Lancia created a beast of a car, the Delta. The Delta took the rally scene by storm, and started what would become a six year winning streak that would go down in history as the longest winning streak of any manufacturer in the WRC to this day.
The death of Lancia. Following the crash and death of Lancia’s Group B racing driver Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto in their S4, the FIA decided it would no longer support Group B, resulting in termination of the category as a whole. In 1986 after Lancia raced for a few years after that winning championship after championship, however, rallying to them was never the same after Group B being banned and they decided to cut their rally division completely after winning the 1992 WRC championship.
