Yellowjackets is categorized as a physiological horror drama. The show follows a high school girls varsity soccer team whose plane crashes in the Canadian Rockies. The show alternates between the younger versions of the girls fighting to survive, and the present day timeline of the survivors 25 years later.
Shauna:
As an adult, Shauna is still very stuck in the past. She’s haunted everyday by the events that took place during her time in the wilderness. She carries a lot of guilt and secrecy. The guilt along with secrecy ends up really affecting her daily life and relationships. Although she’s still resourceful, it now enhances her feelings of regret.
Natalie:
Throughout her adult years, Natalie still carries her independence. Much like Shauna, she also holds onto a lot of her past. She struggles with addiction and self sabotaging tendencies, which ends up involving the authorities most times. Natalie’s main focus through her adult life is finding the truth about what happened to her ex-lover, and figuring out who is tormenting them in the adult timeline.
Taissa:
Taissa’s ambitions followed her into her adult life. Even after the rescue, she continued with her dreams. She followed through with highschool and went to college to pursue her dreams in law. However, her determination often leaves her struggling to make morally correct decisions. Whether it’s between her family or an ex-girlfriend from highschool, she often makes the morally wrong decision.
Van:
Van continues to be tough and loyal throughout her adult years. Van’s adult character really shows how trauma really affects people and how different people cope with their trauma. You can tell throughout the adult timeline that she never really dealt with her trauma, and just pushed it down. She creates a life for herself outside of all of the drama, just to be dragged back into it right when she gets comfortable.
Lottie:
Lottie undergoes significant character development in the adult timeline. At first, she’s portrayed as a calm woman who mostly moved on from her past. However, as the series goes on, it becomes clear that she hasn’t moved on at all and still holds onto a lot of what happened in the wilderness and the person she became there. By the end of her time in the show, she’s having trouble grappling with her mental health and the lingering impact that the wilderness had on her.
Misty:
In both timelines, Misty is portrayed as a quirky and kind of creepy character. She works in a nursing home and her past in the wilderness, being the “nurse” of the group, she does have some very manipulative tendencies. She is very resourceful and often uses this skill to take advantage of many situations. Misty has a past with being an outcast so throughout her adult life she is constantly searching for approval. She does find this with her boyfriend Walter. However, she backfires her trauma onto him, finding him annoying and constantly criticizing him, even though they are very similar.
