A Berry Special Superfood

Angel Purigay, Health Enthusiast

How often do you find yourself reaching for the refrigerator door to grab that container of berries sitting in the back of the fridge? Not too frequently, huh? I suggest you reconsider.

Berries are one of the most powerful superfoods out there. They are low in calories and extremely nutritious, containing several vitamins and minerals. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and other foods in the berry family are high in fiber and antioxidants. This means they can make one feel fuller and thus reduce their appetite.

Fiber helps reduce the number of calories your body absorbs, so when you double your intake of fiber, you are able to absorb up to 130 less calories a day. If you incorporate at least a cup of berries each day into your diet, it will prevent overeating and may help with weight loss.

The antioxidants keep the free radicals under control. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can be both beneficial and harmful to the body. In small quantities, they do no damage. However, they cause oxidative stress in large quantities. Symptoms of oxidative stress include fatigue, pain in joints or muscles, headaches, sensitivity to noise, susceptibility to infections, and more.

This special superfood has much more to offer than one would think, so next time you open that fridge don’t just give it a glance. Pull out that container and give it a try, you might be surprised.
