Seward High School has named sophomore, Atigun Petersen, as February’s Student of the Month, recognizing her consistent effort, positive attitude, and involvement both in and out of the classroom. She is a reliable student who teachers can count on to stay on top of her work and contribute to a good environment at school. Atigun said being recognized is “pretty cool” and that she appreciates her teachers noticing the effort she puts in daily.
She enjoys classes where she can stay engaged and not feel like she’s just going through the motions. ELA is one of her favorites because Ms. Swander keeps it fun and interesting. Atigun also enjoys shop class with Mr. Hemstock because of the hands-on work and the break from a typical classroom setting. Having teachers who actually put energy into their classes has made it easier for her to stay focused and motivated to do well.
Atigun is involved in cheer and Edrising, and both have played a big role in her high school experience. Cheer has helped her learn how to work with others, stay committed, and push through challenges during busy competition seasons. Edrising has given her more direction when it comes to thinking about her future and what she wants to do after high school, especially in terms of setting goals. She recently placed third at the Edrising state competition, securing herself a spot at nationals this coming June.
Looking ahead, she hopes to be someone who can make a change and be influential to people her age. Outside of school, she enjoys baking, cooking, and staying involved in cheer.
She keeps herself on track by using her study halls productively and getting homework done after practice, so it doesn’t pile up later. That routine helps her stay organized and manage everything without falling behind.
One teacher who has stood out to her is Mr. Hemstock, whom she describes as someone who’s always helping students, teaching different subjects, and staying involved around the school. Having teachers who set an example has made a noticeable impact on her experience.
Atigun advises her peers to “be nice to your teachers and ask if they need help.” She also tries to contribute to the school by being a positive person and not bringing negative energy into the building, which she believes can influence more people than you think.
Congratulations to Atigun Petersen on being named Seward High School’s February Student of the Month.
