The Seward High School boys’ swim team put in an extraordinary performance at the recent ASAA State Championships.
The relay team, which consisted of Ben Ambrosiani, Nick Ambrosiani, Oliver Trobaugh, and Iver Gates, took fourth place in the 400m freestyle relay and fifth in the 200m medley. This is only the second time in school history that a relay team has podiumed, the first being just last year.
In addition to these achievements, Ben Ambrosiani took first place in the 50m freestyle, fifth in the 100m butterfly, and his brother Nick placed second in the 100m free and 100m backstroke.
“Yeah, it feels really good to be state champion. I’m one of four athletes total in Seward [swimming] to have got that,” said Ben. “It’s good to see all of the work I’ve been putting in the pool come to fruition.”
The twins are the team’s only two seniors, and have participated in swimming all four years of high school, as well as several seasons in the Tsunami Swim Club.
“It’s been fun. I’ve been working with those guys since they were like, nine or eight, so this was kind of like that capstone season,” said head coach Solomon D’Amico.
Their performances are especially impressive, as swimming does not recognize divisions, meaning the Seahawks competed and won against larger, 4A schools, such as Palmer or Colony. It was also against these schools that they won the boy’s team sportsmanship award.
