The 2024 ASAA DII Wrestling State Championship marked the end of a monumental season for the Seward Seahawks. Eight wrestlers qualified for the tournament, three of whom would not only seed first, but also take state titles: Ridge Conant, Tommy Jarnig, and Hunter Forshee-Kurtz.
Conant, a sophomore wrestling at 119 pounds, beat Evan Andrew of Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe via a 21-5 technical fall, just past halfway in the second period. This marks Conant’s second victory at state. If he continues this trend, he has the opportunity to become a four-time champion—a Seward first.
The senior Jarnig (103), also a returning titleholder, once again mopped up in the finals, this time against Bethel’s Cole Iverson, 13-7.
Finally, two-time champ and senior Forshee-Kurtz (135) faced off against Jaxson Young of Nikiski and won 8-5, becoming the first Seahawk wrestler to ever take three state titles.
However, more than just Forshee-Kurtz set records this year. Only one week earlier, at the Kachemak Conference tournament hosted at home in Seward, freshman Olive Jordan (107G) became the team’s first-ever female regional champion. Just minutes later, Alta Liljemark (also a freshman, 152G) repeated the achievement. Together, alongside Kate Noll, Isabel Jones, and Sobina Clendaniel, they make up the largest girls’ team the school has seen in several years.
