Hi, my name is Axel, and I had a tantalizing experience this summer in the Big Apple! I had the absolute pleasure of attending Vogue College of Fashion’s High School Summer Program, Vogue Summer School. I have always been heavily involved in the online fashion community since I was little. I have kind of always known that I wanted to have my career be related to the fashion industry. Growing up in Seward has made it hard for me to fully express myself creatively and learn more about the fashion industry as a whole. In Seward there might not be a lot of opportunities handed out to you; you should take advantage of every opportunity you can, but also you should seek other opportunities personalized to what you want to do in life. In my case this was attending a fashion summer school in the city I would like to attend college in. In the college application process people love to say that paid summer programs are useless and scams, but I beg to differ. This experience taught me a lot about the industry as a whole and how it runs. If you are interested in fashion as much as I am, I would highly recommend applying to this program or to Parsons’ summer program.
If you are not interested in fashion, you can still go to almost any summer program. If you are interested in any colleges, I would look into high school summer programs for that college. For example, our very own Seward High student Madeline Haas went to the Oxford summer program in London, and she enjoyed it very much. Now back to my experience, this camp started on July 21st and concluded on August 1st and took place in the financial district of Manhattan, New York. A day-to-day routine for me would be waking up and getting ready for class, stopping by Blank Street for breakfast, and then heading to class at Pace University classrooms. After morning classes I would have an hour lunch break and typically go to either Chick-fil-A or Sweetgreen; they also provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the dining hall. After lunch you have your afternoon class, and then after afternoon class, which ends around three, you have the rest of the day till 9 to do whatever you might like around New York. I usually took this time to go to Soho for dinner or shop around the Upper East Side with friends or work on my homework.Â
The actual classes were very important and will help you a lot if you are trying to get into the fashion industry after high school. Some of my main takeaways from this program were to always have a purpose when creating an image. I learned a lot about contrast and lighting of both camera and clothing. I also learned a lot about connections and how important they are within the industry. My teacher taught me so much information, and I will say it is very prominent that you take notes, and I mean a lot of notes. It is also an amazing way to immerse yourself in culture. I met so many people from all over the world and got to learn their culture and story. I also met one of my best friends as well as numerous other friends, whom I frequently talk to and call all the time. It is overall an amazing experience, which I highly recommend; to quote Jessie, it truly felt like a party every day. You guys will hear more about this experience next quarter, but I felt like giving you a little sneak peek into what this experience was like for me in case you guys were interested in listening. I’m going to share some pictures of this experience under this article, so feel free to browse. Â Â
